Reasons to visit Soller, Mallorca
A vibrant main square
The Placa de la Constitució is Soller’s vibrant main square, and where everything happens. There are several restaurants and bars, which are usually always jam-packed, the main church is located on the square, and it’s where the historical tram passes several times an hour.
There’s always a great vibe at Placa de la Constitució, and it extends to the shopping street, Centre Comercial, that branches out from the square. I really wish there were more of this in Soller.

Ride a tram from 1912
For most tourists, riding the historical tram from 1912 is the one and only reason to visit Soller. And I don’t blame them.
It’s a charming, wooden tram that takes you through the idyllic landscapes between Soller and Port de Soller. Even on a day trip to Soller, you’ll get time to take the tram, as it’s only a 15-minute ride each way to Port de Soller.
Even though it’s very touristy (and also overpriced), I think it’s worth taking the Port de Soller tram at least one way. I mean… While in Soller… Why not?

Beautiful port area
Soller also has a port town, like so many other hill towns in the Tramuntana mountains. Port de Soller is possibly my favorite of them all due to its location in a near-closed bay, giving it the feel of being set on the lakefront and not by the sea.
The marina is nice, and there are plenty of restaurants and bars to enjoy cold drinks in the sun.

Sheltered beaches
As a result of the bay of Port de Soller being nearly closed, the beaches are very sheltered from wind and waves, which makes for a nice and safe beach area. It almost gives the vibe of being in Lake Como in Italy, except it’s not.
I really enjoy the beaches in Soller, and while these aren’t the typical turquoise-water beaches in Mallorca, I really think they’re worth visiting.

Proximity to hiking trails
If you’re an avid hiker like me, this will be one of your top reasons to visit Soller. The town is surrounded by mountains on three sides, offering endless hiking trails to explore.
Unfortunately, I haven’t hiked there yet (I’m planning to very soon!) as it’s either been raining when I’ve visited Mallorca in winter, or I’ve been there in summer when it’s way too hot for hiking in the mountains.
Among the top hikes on my bucket list are Barranc de Biniaraix, Cornador Gran, and the easier Cala Tuent.

Picturesque surroundings
I mean, Soller’s surroundings couldn’t get much better. With the majestic Tramuntana mountains towering around the town and views towards the coast, Soller is perfectly located for anyone who appreciates nature.
I love that almost everywhere you go in Soller, you’ll see majestic mountains at the end of the street.

Great base for day trips
Soller is actually one of the best towns to stay in Mallorca, especially if you want to base yourself in the Tramuntana mountains. It’s easy to get there from Palma and the airport, and especially by car; there are many lovely day trips from Soller that you can take.
If you’re only staying in Soller, I recommend spending at least one day in Palma de Mallorca, as the capital city is absolutely stunning. There are way too many things to do in Palma to see it all in a day, but at least you’ll get a good feel of the city.
However, the best places to visit around Soller are the mountain villages. Among my favorites, you find Valdemossa, a fantastic town with plenty of things to explore.
Among the best things to do in Valdemossa, I loved visiting the Chopin Cell, where you can see his original piano that he used when he lived there, and I also enjoyed exploring the monastery and Palacio del Rey Sancho.
If you prefer a slower-paced day trip, I really loved Fornalutx, which is a small village amidst orange and lemon groves in Tramuntana with tremendous views. Both times I’ve been there, it’s been hardly any tourists around – who doesn’t enjoy that?

Easy to reach by public transport
Finally, one of the main reasons to visit Soller is exactly how easy it is to reach by public transport. While I’ve always opted for renting a car and have visited Soller as part of a road trip in Mallorca, it’s actually really easy to get there without a car.
From Palma de Mallorca, you can even take the historic train ride, which takes about an hour to reach Soller. This is by far the most unique way to get there. If you only have 2 days in Mallorca, Soller is one of the easilest places to reach.
If you’re looking for more economical transport, there are buses too.
You can also take the bus between Soller and other towns in the Tramuntana mountains, like Fornalutx, Deia, and Valdemossa.

The things I like less about Soller
So, is Soller a perfect town? In my opinion, it’s not. There are many other cute towns in Mallorca that I would choose over Soller if I were gonna visit just one.
Just to mention a couple, Valdemossa and Pollensa are a lot prettier, and their old towns truly take you back in time. Soller old town is nice, but not great.
Besides, I feel like Soller is a bit more overtouristed and mainly receives tourists due to the tram, which is really cool, don’t get me wrong! But the tram is quite overpriced and crowded, so if you’re looking for something authentic, maybe this isn’t your best shot.
If you don’t care about taking the tram, I honestly don’t think Soller has too much to offer. And now, I’m talking about Soller, not Port de Soller, which I really love. Visiting Soller without going to Port de Soller doesn’t really give that much meaning.
But all this is my subjective meaning, and doesn’t need to be yours.

Summing up: Is Soller worth visiting?
So, is it worth visiting Soller or not? In my humble opinion, it should be on any Mallorca itinerary that includes more villages and towns, or if you’re traveling without a car.
The tram brings diversity to any Mallorca trip, especially when visiting towns in the Tramuntana mountains.
However, if old trams aren’t your vibe, you can easily cross Soller off your Mallorca bucket list.
Happy travels!
